About Us

The Helfet Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing healthcare education in the field of orthopedic trauma surgery. Our mission is to empower healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver high-quality orthopedic trauma care. Through innovative educational programs, we aim to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring practitioners are well-equipped to address the evolving challenges in orthopedic trauma surgery.

By fostering a community of continuous learning, The Helfet Society strives to elevate the standard of care in orthopedic trauma surgery, ultimately improving patient outcomes and contributing to the overall advancement of musculoskeletal health.

About Dr. David L. Helfet, MD

Dr. Helfet is Chief Emeritus of Orthopedic Trauma Service (OTS) for the Hospital for Special Surgery and NY Presbyterian Hospital, professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, and annually ranked as one of Castle-Connolly’s publication, ‘America’s Top Doctors’.

He has served as President of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, Chairman of AO Clinical Investigation and Documentation, examiner of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the Board of Directors of Synthes. He has received honors including the Presidential Guest and Watson-Jones Memorial Lecture of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Hospital for Special Surgery Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Inaugural Award of the Society of Honorary Police Surgeons of the City of New York.

He was inducted into the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma, and serves as an Orthopedic Trauma specialist for the FDNY, the NYPD, and NY State Police.

Dr. Helfet received a BSc in Biochemistry, M.B.CH.B from the University of Cape Town, completed an internship at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa; residency at Johns Hopkins University; Trauma fellowship at the University of Bern/Insel Hospital, in Bern, Switzerland; and Sports Medicine Fellowship at UCLA.

Dr. Helfet’s leadership continues with ongoing research and collaborations with multiple orthopaedic institutions. He has over 350 research publications, continues to publish, and present. Dr. Helfet’s research is supported by numerous grants.
